Communicating Europe

The UK has been a member of the European Community and the European Union for over 35 years. However what is going on in ‘Europe’ and how we relate to it is, after all these years, for many a closed book; not least because the political culture and the legislative processes often seem alien to us in Britain. The reporting of European issues often reflects entrenched views, however sincerely held, by Euro-sceptics and pro-Europeans alike.

In order to gain a deeper understanding and insight into how ‘Europe’ works we need to take a fresh look at the European Parliament, the implications of the Lisbon Treaty, and the very concept of European Citizenship.

Three speakers will present these topics to facilitate our discussion:

  • .Marina Yannakoudakis, MEP (Greenwich,Con.) Member of the Women’s Rights & Equality Committee of the European Parliament. She will talk on 'Violence against Women & Human Trafficking'
  • .Brendan Donnelly, Director of the Federal Trust for Education and Research who will talk on ‘The Lisbon Treaty Explained’.
  • Dr Susan Collard, Lecturer in French, Dept. of Politics & Contemporary European Studies at the University of Sussex who will talk on ‘Communicating European Citizenship’.

It promises to be a very interesting and informative day, encouraging us to visit the European Institutions in Brussels later in the year and see for ourselves how ‘Europe’ works.

We hope to see you at this European Day on 24 April 10.30-15.30 at BFWG Headquarters, 4 Mandeville Courtyard, 142 Battersea Park Road, London.

A New Programme for a New Era PDF Print E-mail

•    Our key, ‘crowd pullers’ continue to be the annual Conference and the day at the House of Lords.  Other excellent days include International Day, 17th October and a new event,  Independents’ Day in Coventry on 14th November. At the former Helena MacDermott, spoke on her experiences as a volunteer amongst some of the world’s poorest people, working in a stone quarry on the outskirts of Mumbai.

•    In Coventry at the Herbert Art Gallery, we all learnt a pilgrim’s song, playing on individual harps. It was very satisfying and tuneful event though several members were concerned about their lack of musicality!

•    Changes to the programme include arranging events well in advance, aiming towards a menu of different but annual events and the creation of events tailored for Independent members.

•    On 30th January 2010 Sam Tang is speaking on, ‘making things happen’. She is the first person appointed to raise public awareness of chemistry based in a UK university.

•    2010s’ events include our conference in Canterbury with the pre-conference seminar on Friday 9th July; regional meetings and the research presentations day on Saturday 22nd May. Please see other pages for details.

I am planning to work with Local Associations to each organise a national event and a PhD presentations day. This would capitalise on regional strengths, interest and expertise and further elucidate BFWG to non-members.

Finally, my thanks to every person who has helped in anyway to make an event possible from booking a speaker for an LA meeting to booking the venue for the 2010 Conference.
