{"id":5711,"date":"2019-03-28T10:53:22","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T10:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bfwg.org.uk\/bfwg2\/?p=5711"},"modified":"2026-07-02T06:42:29","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T05:42:29","slug":"academic-and-career-profiles-and-progression-at-harper-adams-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bfwg.org.uk\/bfwg2\/academic-and-career-profiles-and-progression-at-harper-adams-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic and Career Profiles and Progression at Harper Adams University"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"et_pb_section_0 et_pb_section et_section_regular et_block_section preset--module--divi-section--default\"><div class=\"et_pb_row_0 et_pb_row et_block_row\"><div class=\"et_pb_column_0 et_pb_column et_pb_column_4_4 et-last-child et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\"><div class=\"et_pb_image_0 et_pb_image et_pb_module et_block_module\"><span class=\"et_pb_image_wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bfwg.org.uk\/bfwg2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/womens-academic-career-profiles-.jpg\" title=\"womens-academic-career-profiles-\" width=\"800\" height=\"598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bfwg.org.uk\/bfwg2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/womens-academic-career-profiles-.jpg 800w, https:\/\/bfwg.org.uk\/bfwg2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/womens-academic-career-profiles--300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bfwg.org.uk\/bfwg2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/womens-academic-career-profiles--768x574.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bfwg.org.uk\/bfwg2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/womens-academic-career-profiles--510x382.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" class=\"wp-image-5634\" \/><\/span><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_text_0 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p><strong>Academic and Career Profiles and Progression Harper Adams University January 29th 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A real\u00a0 need \u00a0seems to be arising amongst young academics for guidance and inspiration in their strivings \u00a0for success in both personal and \u00a0career progression. \u00a0\u00a0At this seminar participants were privileged to be guided and encouraged by three well qualified speakers:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ms Carrie de Silva Ll.B \u00a0(Hons), \u00a0MA, \u00a0PGCE \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Harper Adams University<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Principal Lecturer and Post Graduate Coordinator Land Management<\/li>\n<li>Teaching Duties<\/li>\n<li>Law and Taxation on undergraduate and post-graduate Land Management Courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Carrie organised this seminar Academic and Career Profiles and Progression at Harper Adams University in January this year. \u00a0\u00a0The audience consisted of\u00a0 a variety of lecturers at differing stages of their careers.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Carrie pointed out\u00a0 that the\u00a0 Gender\u00a0 Pay gap is just one of many issues for women .\u00a0 Other concerns include:\u00a0 working hours, workloads, \u00a0fixed term contracts,\u00a0 attitudes amongst employers to career breaks , the need for role models., and the need for individuals to maximise the impact of their current work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mrs Susan\u00a0 Jeavons \u00a0BSc (Hons)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Harper Adams University<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Senior Lecturer Companion Animal Health, Companion Animal House Manager and Placement Manager \u00a0for Animal Courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sue's focus was the investigation of work- life conflicts experienced by women .\u00a0 Her presentation examined three areas for the audience to consider:<\/p>\n<p>1) Learning to play the game\u00a0 2) Identity\u00a0 3) Career application.\u00a0 She likened these considerations to collecting stamps as opposed to box ticking. \u00a0Sue emphasised\u00a0 the importance of understanding differing approaches of men and women to , for example to \u00a0Job Application : Men apply for jobs when they meet 60% of the criteria ; women,\u00a0 on the other hand,\u00a0 seek to meet 100% of requirements.\u00a0 The participants were asked to discuss which areas in the world of work they find difficult\u00a0 e.g. Getting your voice heard,\u00a0 dealing with conflict.\u00a0 The presentation also examined ways of\u00a0 making an \u00a0impact at work.\u00a0 It was suggested , to move forward, one made three lists : who you are, who you want to be, who you need to be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Cynthia Burek BSc, \u00a0MsC, PhD, FGS. FHE\u00a0 <\/strong>University of Chester ;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Professor of Geoconservation ,<\/li>\n<li>Dept of Biological Sciences ; Deputy Chair : Centre for Science Communications; Research Affiliate :Institute of Gender Studies,<\/li>\n<li>Director : GeoMon Geopark,<\/li>\n<li>Convener: Graduate Women International Fellowship Committee<\/li>\n<li>Deputy Chair: Cheshire RIGS<\/li>\n<li>Trustee: Funds for Women Graduates,<\/li>\n<li>Chair of Board of Trustees: British Federation of Women Graduates Scholarship Committee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Professor Burek\u00a0 traced her career from her first graduation to her Professorship at The University of Chester.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She began by explaining that it is important to have respect for the people around you and stated that it is important to learn from one's failures.\u00a0 Key factors\u00a0 are\u00a0 flexibility regarding\u00a0 both jobs and location,\u00a0 never to say no but indicate\u00a0 you will think about \u00a0something, \u00a0\"skill up\" and accept negative criticism, demonstrate enthusiasm and try to provide solutions and come up with<\/p>\n<p>new ideas.\u00a0 It is most important to \u00a0always challenge inequality and injustice and lack of choice.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cynthia stated role models are of key importance and that one needs time and opportunity to reflect .\u00a0 \" Drivers\" for Cynthia are\u00a0 injustice , disrespect \u00a0and ignorance. \u00a0\" Boosters\" for her are \u00a0\u00a0volunteering, \u00a0helping others, skilling \u00a0up, using the media.\u00a0 Cynthia warned one has to be prepared to be lonely at times.\u00a0 She also mentioned that it is important to make retirement work for one,\u00a0 consider \u00a0impact and advertise on correspondence one's range of activity.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar concluded with a buffet lunch and important informal discussion amongst
